THESIS XVIII

PART TWO — THE GRID

Membership is itself the sensitive datum.

The disclosure is not only what you said. It is that you were there.

Norway's data protection authority fined Grindr NOK 65 million in December 2021 for sharing user data with advertising partners without valid consent, upheld on appeal in 2023 and by the Norwegian courts in October 2025. The regulator's reasoning is the operative part: data revealing that someone is a Grindr user strongly indicates that they belong to a sexual minority. What was disclosed was not what a person said on the platform. It was that the person was on it.
