THESIS XXII

PART TWO — THE GRID

The company that sells community suppressed its own.

A return-to-office mandate followed a union campaign. Half the workforce left.

In July 2023 a supermajority of Grindr's staff announced their intention to unionise with the Communications Workers of America. Within weeks the company issued a return-to-office mandate requiring relocation to a hub city, giving workers two weeks to decide. Roughly eighty of 178 employees left; the union noted the burden fell particularly on trans employees, who would have had to find new healthcare providers. On 1 November 2024 the National Labor Relations Board issued a complaint alleging that the policy was retaliation, that the severance agreement presented to workers was unlawful, and that the company had refused to recognise or bargain with the union. Grindr calls the allegations meritless and states that the transition to hybrid work predated the union petition.
